GB Skeet Make History At World Championships
GB Skeet Make History At World Championships
Sophie Herrmann has become the first junior GB woman ever to become World Champion (researched by Sarah Daly).
That piece of history was made on Monday 3rd October – on a day that GB secured gold and a silver medal in the individual junior skeet events.
Just a day later, the duo of Sophie Herrmann and Mitchell Brooker-Smith secured another gold for GB in Junior Mixed Team Skeet.
17-year-old Herrmann was exceptional throughout her individual event, finishing 2nd in qualification with a score of 112, first in her semi-final with a score of 22, and first in the final with a score of 30.
Speaking after her fantastic achievement, Herrmann said: “It feels unbelievable. To think I've come away World Champion, it still hasn't sunk in. "It's quite windy so the targets were going all over the show. I had a few bumps along the way but I just kept plodding - and plodded my way to a gold medal!"
Sarah Daly commenting on Sophie’s shoot said “This is an amazing achievement and the first ever Junior Team GB World Championship Gold in OSK!”
The individual silver medal came in Junior Men’s Skeet thanks to Mitchell Brooker-Smith who finished 3rd in qualification with a score of 121, first in the semi-final with a score of 26, and secured second place on the podium with 32 in the final.
Mitchell was delighted to win the silver after just missing out on an individual medal at the European Championships earlier this year. He said: "It feels fantastic. Especially after the Europeans, just missing out there was hard to take. This medal really is the icing on the case and shows I'm building. The nerves started to build a little bit in the final and after missing a pair it was a long line of 20, so I'm really pleased to have kept my composure and pull it back the best I could."
In the Junior Mixed Team event, the pair of Mitchell and Sophie continued their success, finishing qualification in top spot, before beating China 6-4 in the final.
Congratulations also to Bethany Norton who finished 8th in the Junior Women's Skeet competition in her first ever World Championships.
