Day Two Report:
Defending British Open English Sporting champion Mark Winser topped the leaderboard on day two of the competition to earn his place in Sunday’s finals day. Having won the title for the first time in his career 12 months ago, Winser posted a 114 on Thursday morning which couldn’t be matched.
“I’m really happy with my score. As George (Digweed) said yesterday 115 is a very good score out there, I don’t see anybody shooting any higher than that.”
“Target wise it’s a very interesting course; he’s used the ground really well and played tricks on you in areas. A lot of them targets took some working out, you can’t step in taking anything for granted around the course – it was a very clever set up.”
Looking ahead to the finals day he added, “It will be a hell of a buzz to see this on Sunday when everybody is here, so it will nice to get back on Sunday.”
Last year’s Ladies champion Hannah Gibson was also in action on Thursday morning and posted 100 to set up a potential title defence on Sunday.
Welsh shooter Dylan Adams received an extra surprise when he checked in to shoot, having won a pair of Pilla Panther X7 glasses in a random prize draw. The glasses were kindly supplied by Starkey Headsets, supporting the event.
As well as the competitions, there is also a Pool Shoot and the mini trade village to keep visitors engaged at West Midlands Shooting Ground. Paul Grimshaw from Edgar Brothers (who are sponsoring the Overall High Gun with a Zoli-Z Sport High Rib Sporter) said, “We’ve had a lot of interest in the Zoli High Rib and the Sporting Guns. This is a great competition to be a part of, it’s great to see lots of people competitively shooting and we’re very proud to be here exhibiting today.”
The Sportrap continues to be a closely run affair. Martin Papworth shot 92 ex 100 to join Ed Solomons, Mark Webster and George Digweed at the top of the leaderboard and that score remains the one to beat.
Mark Jones in C Class shot 84 on the Sportrap on Thursday afternoon to put him joint top of the leaderboard in his respective class alongside Peter Cairney.
Alan Sharp a B class shooter from the Royal Air Force also took to the Sportrap today, following his 92 on the Sporting course yesterday. After his score of 69 ex 100 he said, “They were tough targets, but really enjoyable. I was chuffed with my 92 in the English Sporting yesterday which placed me in the top ten for my class on the day. I thoroughly recommend coming to shoot a major competition.”
As the competition begins to hot up, we look forward to another full day of shooting tomorrow – and hopefully the rain continues to hold off!
