English Skeet Doubles, Sunday July 3
The first weekend of July finally saw some pleasant weather as the skeet contingent arrived at Nottingham & District Gun Club for the English Open Skeet Doubles Championship. 84 competitors entered the event, enjoying a nice, friendly atmosphere and some long awaited summer sun.
Jonny Hall of Norfolk was the target man early on, making a long journey and shooting on one of the first squads to put a 97 on the board. His lead didn’t last very long at all – on the very next squad Nottinghamshire’s young skeet star Tom Tristram only dropped two targets to put the pressure on all the following squads. Fellow Notts shooter Darrel White also shot on Tom’s squad and scored a 95 to set the pace in C Class.
Mick Rolstone and Ross Elgie both managed 97 but it was not until the very last squads that shoot-offs began to look likely. Another Notts local, Rob Denoon, clearly enjoying his free Sundays since the sale of Orston equalled Tom’s 98. This was quickly followed by another 98 from Darren Parsons, the winner from the previous year, on the next squad.
However on the penultimate squad was Dave Morgan; if Dave is booked on to an event then there is always a good chance that he will be in the mix. The EO Skeet Doubles proved no different, Dave did not miss a single target winning the event outright with a stunning 100 straight, no mean feat at Skeet Doubles.
So it was a three-way shoot off to decide 2nd & 3rd overall. Shooting pairs from peg 4, it was Tom who shot first and cleared his 2 pairs, Rob Denoon was next and did the same. Darren Parsons missed a bird on each of his pairs but was consoled by still winning the AA trophy. The two Notts shooters took another 2 pairs, Tom again put the pressure on Rob by hitting all of his targets, Rob missed one leaving him in 3rd overall and winning A Class. Tom took 2nd overall, B Class and retained his Colts title. Michael Cross was second in Colts with 93.
Natalie Bales followed up her fantastic EO Skeet with the Ladies High Gun title in this event scoring 95, 3 points ahead of Joy Hirons in 2nd and Wendy Allen one point behind Joy with a 91 taking the last ladies place.
In Juniors, Holly Pennington was 3rd, Matt Pegg came 2nd and George Owen took the title with 93. George also retained the Parent and Child Trophy with his dad Craig scoring 185 – just one point ahead of Stan & Michael Cross.
In Veterans it was Lol Barr that was victorious on a 95, just one point ahead of Roy Partridge and Ash Parfrement taking the last place with 92.
High Gun Dave won the event shooting Gamebore Steel 28gram 9s through his Beretta Teknys Gold Auto. He commented on what a fantastic competition it was, as it always is at Nottingham, he thanked Mick Rolstone for the motivation, cheekily saying “I had to put 100 in, Mick scored 97 and I wanted to beat him”.
